Cahinsaw Sculptor:The art of J. Chester 'Skip' Armstrong
This book is a fine addition to any admirer of contemporary wood sculptor. Sherman offers a unique insight into the thought behinde Skips' carving. A thought provoking book that took me as a chainsaw carver to a new level. Fine pictures of Skips magnificent work and humorous stories of Skips life. The story of how this artist took the focus from the saw to the increadible pieces of art that can begin with the chainsaw. The only thing I would have liked more would be a larger version of this book.

Civil Procedure: A Modern Approach (American Casebook Series and Other Coursebooks)
Published in Hardcover by West Wadsworth (June, 2000)
Authors: Richard L. Marcus, Martin H. Redish, and Edward F. Sherman
Average review score:

An excellent casebook on Civil Procedure
This was my casebook for my first-year Civil Procedure class, and although I was not thrilled with the prospects of spending a year sorting through the quagmire of the F.R.Civ.P. this book made life and the rules much easier. If you have a choice as to which casebook to use, I would recommend this one.

Clean Clothes for Oliver

Authors: Andy Cooke, Jane Sherman, and Jodi Huelin
Average review score:

Lots of cleaning fun
This book has quickly become a favorite at my house. I have a daycare and they love to watch the clothes spin. We have to make sure all the pieces are put away when finished; but, this book has been a lot of fun.

The Complete Guide to Running and Growing Your Business
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (December, 1997)
Author: Andrew J. Sherman
Average review score:

Andrew Sherman hits a common sense homer!
The Complete Guide To Running And Growing Your Business is an excellent resource document for small businesses. If Mr. Sherman had asked me, however, I would have changed the title to "Very important small business stuff that's hard to find anywhere else, especially written in plain English". This is the second book I've owned by this author, and knowing that he is an attorney makes me all the more impressed, because he writes about technical and business fundamentals in a way that the average person can understand. If you want to train salespeople or create a website, this ain't the book for that. But if the answers to hundreds of basic business questions that most of us just don't know is what you are looking for, this book won't let you down. I think it will save you some legal fees, too.

Concept and Design in Music: A Comprehensive Approach to Theory
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (January, 1989)
Author: Robert W. Sherman
Average review score:

Pushing Musical Limits
I have been playing music for the last 14 years in one form or another. I started out as a rock guitarist and am now producing experimental electronica. I bought this book about seven years ago, started reading it, then had to put it down. This book is NOT for beginners.

Along with "The Advancing Guitarist" by Mick Goodrick, this book is intended to push your musical boundaries. The emphasis is on orchestrated music, but I have found application in all the music I do and love. Sherman approaches music theory in an exciting, creative, and stimulating manner.

If you feel that your art is stagnating, buy this book. It will make you explore facets of music you never considered seeking out, and I guarantee a fascinating journey.

Corvette 427 - Practical Restoration of a '67 Roadster
Published in Paperback by Bentley Publishers (August, 2000)
Author: Don Sherman
Average review score:

Enjoyable reading, Not for the NCRS crowd
I will start off by saying that if you are restoring a Midyear Corvette to factory original standards (NCRS, Bloomington) this book will be of little help. I did give it four stars because it is a fun book to read and does offer a multitude of general tips for Corvette rebuilding. If you are looking for reference material for your numbers matching restoration, your money will be better spent elsewhere. If you want to read the honest truth about what it can take to turn a beater into beautiful street machine, this may be for you.

Devil's Arithmetic: A Unit Plan
Published in Paperback by Teacher's Pet Publications, Inc. (September, 1998)
Author: Janine Sherman
Average review score:

A Difficult Topic Made Easy
When I read the novel, The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, I was moved. I thought and thought about what approach I wanted to take when I introduced it to my 8th grade students. This teacher "tool" simplified my fears and made teaching the novel much easier and more significant to my students. The step by step guide is excellent for beginner teachers as well as those who have taught the novel before. It gives insight to the Holocaust and examples of bringing difficult situations to a middle school level. I would recommend it to any language arts or history teacher who wishes to use this novel in the classroom and be successful in doing it.

Handbook to Middle East Amphibians and Reptiles (Contributions to Herpetology, No 8)
Published in Hardcover by Ssar Pubns (December, 1992)
Authors: Alan E. Leviton, Steven C. Anderson, Kraig Adler, and Sherman A. Minton
Average review score:

stresses taxonomy, some useful photos
Useful book. very detailed taxonomy and identification guide. The guide does not cover Egypt. It covers the area from Red Sea thru persia and southern turkey to yemen. venomous snakes special annex. nothing on captive care. the book is for scientist/herpetologists, but I, as a normal guy, also find it useful in identifying species and habitats.

Horse of Flame
Published in Paperback by Avon (November, 1990)
Author: Josepha Sherman
Average review score:

Another Russian-based fairy tale
The Horse of Flame is actually a sequel to The Shining Falcon, though it stands up pretty well on its own. Based heavily on Russian folk-lore and mythology, it contains plenty of magical trials, court intrigue, and (as always) True Love. It seemed slightly less fresh than The Shining Falcon, though, and I did not find the protagonists, Princess Marya and her consort Emelian, to be nearly as delightful as Finist and Maria. The title also seemed inappropriate, as the horse in question was not a terribly major character.

Despite its few faults, The Horse of Flame is a very fun fantasy adventure book and a decent sequel to The Shining Falcon. Those who liked the first will probably want to read it (though Finist and Maria are given less attention), and it is also recommended to fans of Lackey's The Firebird.

How Not to Get Pregnant
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (August, 1990)
Authors: Sherman Selber and Sherman J. Silber
Average review score:

This provides a comprehensive guide to family planning
I found "How Not to Get Pregnant" to a thorough commentary on how conception occurs and how it can be controlled. The focus of the book is on preventing pregnancy, but I found that it educated me on the workings of the human reproductive system in such a way that I understand how to avoid pregancy or how to become pregant quite well. The explantions appear to be accurate and educational (although I admit I am not professionally qualified to comment on the accuracy).

The first chapter explains the human reproductive system in great detail, and although I am a father who has been married for many years, I learned the subject in a more detailed and useful manner than I had previously. Subsequent chapters investigate every method of birth control I have ever heard of, including "natural" methods of birth control and those enabled by modern medicine. Topics were covered in such a way that the needs of people with differing values, religions, and livestyles are addressed. Every topic was fairly treated with pros and cons discussed.

This was a great book and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about human reproduction and how they can control it. My only reservation is that it was originally published more than a decade ago, and I am certain that new information is available. However, I question whether a book as readable and understandable has been written in the last decade.
